When asked if he was excited for his future at Swift, Javier made it clear he has much to look forward to. “I can’t wait to get on the road solo. Everything is going so well,” he said. “I love the company already and everything they’ve shown me. They’ve given me great pay and great benefits. Everything has worked out. For all you new drivers out there, I would choose Swift!”

Mentors like Bill must be not only highly skilled but adaptable too. Trainees come from all walks of life and confidence levels, requiring mentors to balance support with high standards. Their goal is to use those four-plus weeks to provide competency-based training that results in a safe, capable solo driver.

“One thing I’ve learned over the years is that every trainee is different, and every trainee provides a different adventure,” Bill shared. “You get to learn different styles of teaching different trainees because they all have their own way of learning.”

“All I’ve got to say to new or potential mentors is stay with it, because it’s a learning process,” he added. “The more you do it, the easier it gets—and everyone, in the end, feels they’ve had a great experience and wouldn’t give it up for anything.”
